GlobalGirl Media (GGM) is an NGO that trains female identifying and gender expansive young people, ages 15-25 from resource-poor communities to become agents of change through producing and distributing their own digital media stories. All of our programming is free.
We empower our students to tell their own stories and enter media careers by giving them the skills, experience, and professional connections to succeed and improve female representation in media.
You can’t be what you can’t see. Our media tells us a lot about who we are and the stories we believe about ourselves. Yet, a female POV is under-published, under-broadcast and under-streamed compared to a male POV. Now more than ever, women and girls of color need a place at the table to change the narrative.
That’s where we come in.We change the storytellers so they can change the world.
Global Girl Media empowers young women to bring their often-overlooked perspectives onto the global media stage. By turning up the volume of girls’ voices globally, GGM promotes freedom of expression and strengthens substantive journalism that addresses historically marginalized voices. We do this while also building self-esteem, leadership capacity, and 21st century skills. Founded in 2010, we are currently active in South Africa, Kosovo, Chicago, Los Angeles, Greece, London and the Bay Area.
What we believe
GGM believes training young women of color in digital media journalism is important to developing strong, healthy communities. For youth, particularly young women, education and self expression are key to changing the entrenched stereotypes and values that hold them back and keep them from succeeding in the fields of media and technology. GGM intentionally works exclusively with girls to provide a safe, nurturing environment where they can lead, speak their minds, and learn how to close the gender/technology divide.
Our Partners
GGM partners with schools, after-school programs, other NGO’s, and community centers to select girls for our programs and help sustain their work. In addition to four-week summer trainings, Global Girls participate in year-long mentorships with leading journalists, filmmakers, and new media mavericks. In this way, we provide both short-term and long-term support to low-income, marginalized girls around the world.
AGENCY
GlobalGirls gain 21st century technical skills to produce ethical and impactful journalistic media. They learn video production, cinematography, audio recording, editing, writing, and journalism skills to produce compelling content.
ACCESS
We connect GlobalGirls to mentors, internships, and job opportunities that build their self-esteem and confidence to tell their own stories and pursue careers in journalism and filmmaking. These experiences help them thrive and become leaders in school, work and community. They learn public speaking skills, take risks, dream bigger, and work as a team.
AUTHORITY
The digital content the girls create is shared broadly on multiple platforms, sparking discussion and leading to social change. Girls become more aware of things happening around the world, learn how to identify problems, feel empowered to solve them, and educate and inspire others.
