Imani Crenshaw: My Experience Covering the DNC
Covering the Democratic National Convention (DNC) as a GlobalGirl Media reporter was one of the most rewarding experiences that I have ever had! Because of the grueling work, which included long hours, back to back interviews and a strenuous schedule, I was able to be a part of history and produce work that will remain important to me for the rest of my life. The energy in Philadelphia was electrifying as people gathered to bear witness to Secretary Hillary Clinton make history as the first female nominee for President. This was my very first national convention, so I didn’t know exactly what to expect. But, I went into this amazing opportunity with an open mind ready to learn.
While reporting from the DNC, I was able to meet and interview some of the most amazing women of our time, like Hilda Solis, the first Hispanic woman to serve in the State Senate, Judy Chu, the first Chinese American Woman elected to the U.S. Representatives from California’s 27th Congressional District and Dolores Huerta, the American labor leader and civil rights activist who was the co-founder of the National Farmworkers Association, later becoming the United Farm Workers. These are just a few of the phenomenal women I was able to speak with. Being able to interview them and listen to their backgrounds and perspectives on women in politics was an experience I will never forget. I was also able to attend the Women’s Caucus and Hispanic Caucus where I got a firsthand look into what it sounds and feels like for women and people of color in politics.
After being given this incredible opportunity to put into action the valuable tools I have learned through GlobalGirl Media, I can say that my week as a reporter at the 2016 DNC is something the world needs to experience.
